چکیده
miniscrews reportedly have failure rates as high as 10-30%.1-4 Miniscrew loosening or tipping can result from any of the following factors: • Insufficient bone quantity or quality at the insertion site.5-7 • Use of a screw of inadequate diameter or length.3,8-10 • Inappropriate intraosseous design.10-12 • Root contact during insertion.13 • Manipulation by the patient’s fingers or tongue.8 • Poor oral hygiene. • Application of excessive forces or moments.9,14 • Too long a lever arm, if the miniscrew is inserted in a region where the gingiva or mucosa is too thick.9,14,15 • Peri-implantitis from insertion in the mucosal region.2,8 • Insufficient primary stability.15-17 • Bone damage on insertion from stress or overheating.2,18,19 In an attempt to improve stability and prevent tipping, we tried coupling two miniscrews in the line of force. Initially, we tied the miniscrews together with an .017" × .025" stainless steel sectional wire or a premolar band surrounding the screw heads, covering the assembly with Transbond LR* resin. Application and removal of these components were time-consuming, however, and in some cases the attachments failed because of resin fracture. As an alternative, we developed the Benefit** miniscrew system,20 with four different types of stainless steel abutments that can be attached to the top of the implant with integrated miniature fixing screws (Fig. 1). The Benefit system can provide stable skeletal anchorage, especially when two coupled miniscrews are used (Fig. 2). The two abutments have to be connected by welding or soldering, however, which requires an impression

Stability of connected mini-implants and miniplates for skeletal anchorage in orthodontics.
The aim of this study was to examine the primary stability of connected mini-implants and miniplates. Three different skeletal anchorage systems were investigated: (1) two 1.5 mm diameter cylindrical mini-implants connected with a 0.021 x 0.025 inch stainless steel (SS) wire, (2) two 1.6 mm diameter tapered mini-implants connected with a 0.021 x 0.025 inch SS wire, and (3) two 2.0 mm diameter c...
متن کاملOrthodontic retreatment using anchorage with miniplate to camouflage a Class III skeletal pattern
This manuscript describes the treatment of a 27-year-old patient who was previously treated with two maxillary first premolar extractions. The patient had skeletal Class III malocclusion, Class III canine relationship, anterior crossbite, and a concave profile. As the patient refused orthognathic surgery, a miniplate was used on the right side of the lower arch as an anchorage unit after the ex...
متن کاملPain perception during miniplate-assisted orthodontic therapy.
Miniplate and screw devices are widely used for fracture repair and fixation of osteotomies. Currently, these miniplate systems are being used as orthodontic treatments for skeletal anchorage. However, despite the widespread use of these treatments, patients are apprehensive when they need to undergo miniplate procedures. Recently, we assessed pain perception using the visual analog scale (VAS)...
متن کاملTreatment of Skeletal Anterior Open Bite Using Absolute Anchorage: A Case Report and Review
Background and purpose: Skeletal anchorage is a new aid for the correction of moderate anterior open bite. This study aimed at treating moderate anterior open bite using posterior intrusion via mini implants. In addition, a review of studies carried out on open bite correction using absolute anchorage was performed. Materials and methods: The following keywords were used: open bite, camouflag...
متن کاملTreatment of a skeletal Class II malocclusion using fixed functional appliance with miniplate anchorage
Based on our literature search, we found that the use of miniplate anchorage with Forsus fatigue-resistance device (FRD) has not yet been reported. Therefore, the aim of the present case report was to present the treatment of a patient with skeletal Class II malocclusion with mandibular retrusion using Forsus FRD with miniplate anchorage. Fixed appliances with 0.022-inch slots were attached to ...
